All this rubbish that people talk about competition and survival of the fittest and how markets are the only way to organise our lives: that's what got us into this ridiculous mess with the banks and our missing billions. One of the many huge ironies involved is that this nonsense is eloquently and insistently peddled using human language: one of our crowning glories as a species, and the quintessential product of cooperation. And the fittest, in the existence of a social species like ours, are, of course, the most social.
