If you have a conversation involving money and cars with the guy who stands around in the cold next to 20 carefully polished but probably dodgy motors at the used-car yard down the road, what kinds of assumption would you make about what he tells you? Wouldn't a certain level of scepticism be in order? When he claims that the condensation filling the inside of the cheap Fiat is only there because they washed it recently (and not because all the rubber seals are shot) do you automatically believe him? No? Good for you. Now extend that principle to your rulers and see where it gets us, because the truth is that far too many people are far too credible when it comes to the sales pitches coming out of Westminster.
