We have been hoodwinked into thinking that markets find efficient solutions. They don't: they find profitable solutions. No one could possibly argue that building everything in China and shipping it all around the globe is an efficient use of resources, but that is precisely the arrangment the market is leading to, simply because it happens to be profitable.
